WINES WITH A VIEW

The Colares Demarcated Region is situated between the Sintra Mountains and the Atlantic Ocean. The vineyards closest to the sea are distinctive in that they are planted in sandy soil, a unique technique which enabled Colares to withstand the phylloxera plague that proved catastrophic for wine production in Europe.

The vineyards most exposed to the sea tend to be protected by cane fencing, producing Ramisco red grapes characterised by their strong personality and robustness, and Malvasia white grapes, which possess a hint of salinity and a lingering finish, resulting in wines that are ideal for savouring whilst enjoying the breathtaking views of Sintra.

THE PLAGUE THAT DEVASTATED EUROPE

The phylloxera pest ruined almost all wine production in Europe, with very few exceptions, one of which was Colares. Millions of people suffered as a result of the disaster, which was one of the major drivers of emigration from Europe in the 19th century.

GLORIOUS EDEN

Sintra has long fascinated writers and artists. Lord Byron, the famous English poet, referred to the region as a “glorious Eden”. The traditional Colares vineyards are an integral part of this heavenly landscape.
