Casal Sta. Maria
Casal Sta. Maria
Baron Bodo von Bruemmer was born in 1911 into a German aristocratic family in what was then the Russian Empire, now Latvia. In the 1960s, he visited Portugal and fell in love with Sintra, eventually purchasing the Casal de Sta Maria estate. An entrepreneur, he bred goats and horses until, at the age of 96, he decided to invest in wine.
The Baron, who died aged 105, lived to see the success of his wines, produced from different grape varieties. The business is currently led by his grandson Nicholas. The vineyards used for this production overlook the mountains and the sea, which gives them their unmistakable salinity.
