Adega Regional de Colares

The Colares region is famous for being one of the only ones in mainland Europe to have withstood the phylloxera plague in the 19th century, thanks to the technique of growing vines in sandy soil. Faced with rumours that some of the wine produced in Colares came from elsewhere, a group of producers came together to found the Adega Regional. This enabled them to better control quality.

Adega Regional de Colares continues to produce high-quality wines. A visit to the historic building reveals the difference in production between wines from hard soil and those from sandy soil. Francisco Figueiredo began working in Colares in 1999 and took on the role of winemaker in 2005.
