ROMAN ROOTS

Although it is known simply as the Arruda Demarcated Region, the fact that the town from which it takes its name is called Arruda dos Vinhos tells you all you need to know about its connection to viticulture, dating back at least to Roman times. Arruda is particularly renowned for its red wines, which are distinctive, robust and intense; they can be cellared for several years without losing quality but should be opened some time before drinking to reach their peak.

The many slopes on which the vineyards grow allow for ample sun exposure and benefit from the both Atlantic and Tejo influences, with the resulting variations in temperature, humidity and wind.

FROM THE ATLANTIC TO THE TEJO

Arruda dos Vinhos benefits not only from the fresh, saline influence of the Atlantic, but also from its proximity to the River Tejo. The resulting variations in temperature, humidity and wind create unrivalled conditions for wine production.

WINDMILLS AND STONE ROADS

The many windmills dotting the surrounding hills bear witness to Arruda’s rural character. At the same time, the Roman stone roads and even the ruins of an ancient bridge attest to the town’s long history.
