CISTERCIAN HERITAGE

The Encostas D’ Aire Demarcated Region is geographically defined by the Aire and Candeeiros mountain ranges and is divided into the sub-regions of Ourém and Alcobaça.

Whilst the wines from Alcobaça display notes of salinity and freshness, in Ourém the most distinctive influence comes from the Cistercian monks who settled there and who, over the years, perfected local viticulture, giving rise to the Medieval Ourém Wine made with 80 per cent white Fernão Pires grapes and 20 per cent red Trincadeira.

THE GOTHIC MONASTERY

The famous Monastery of Alcobaça is where the influence of the religious orders in this region is most evident. Dating from the 12th century, it houses the tombs of D. Pedro and D. Inês de Castro, the couple who best embody forbidden love in Portugal.

MEDIEVAL RESILIENCE

Ourém’s Medieval Wine bears witness to a tradition stretching back several centuries. Produced according to strict rules, it was once threatened by the imposition of European regulations, but was saved by the intervention of the Portuguese authorities.
