A TRADITION REBORN BY THE SEA

Situated right by the sea, Carcavelos is one of Portugal’s smallest demarcated regions, and is dedicated exclusively to the production of fortified wine. Due to its unique climatic conditions, wine production has existed here for ages, but its main driving force was the 18 th Century Marquis of Pombal, who owned an estate in Oeiras dedicated to this purpose.

With the massive urbanisation of the area encompassing Oeiras and Cascais, the production of Carcavelos wine plummeted, but it never disappeared and is gradually being revived through a joint effort by the CVR and the local authorities.

SMALL BUT STRONG

The Carcavelos Demarcated Region is the country’s smallest wine-growing area and one of the world’s smallest Designations of Origin dedicated exclusively to the production of fortified wine.

THE LORD’S VINEYARD

Among the few producers in Carcavelos is the Caparide Seminary, part of the Patriarchate of Lisbon. Taking part in the care of the vineyard and the grape harvest forms part of the training for these young men as they prepare for the priesthood in the Catholic Church.
