Fernando Martins was born into a family with links to the wine industry and, in 1955, decided to found the Sociedade Agrícola da Labrugeira. In the same decade, he began bottling wine. His dedication to wine ran parallel to a successful career in the construction and hospitality industries. He was also president of Sport Lisboa e Benfica between 1981 and 1987.
He began by selling his wine in the restaurants of his hotels. The vineyard grew, as did the variety of grape varieties, alongside the necessary modernisation. His son, Raúl Martins, remains closely involved with Sociedade Agrícola da Labrugeira.
