João Melícias had a successful academic career before venturing into wine production. A graduate in agricultural industries specialising in oenology, he gained experience in Bordeaux before returning to Portugal, where he lectured at the Higher Institute of Agronomy (Instituto Superior de Agronomia) in Lisbon while providing oenological consultancy.
In 1990, he left teaching to explore his family heritage. He restructured the grape varieties across his 17 hectares of vineyard and put his oenological knowledge into practice to produce Fonte das Moças, a prestigious brand. This approach is rooted in a philosophy of minimal intervention in the winery.
