Palaces and sand-grown vineyards
Unique treasures between the hills and the sea
Start your tour in the historic town of Sintra. Stroll through the narrow old streets and visit the National Palace and the Church of Saint Martin. Be sure to try a travesseiro or a queijada. If you have the energy and the time, walk up to the Moorish Castle and Pena Palace, or otherwise catch a bus. Set aside the entire morning for this.
Heading down the hill, take the tram towards Praia das Maçãs and get off at Adega Regional de Colares to discover the processes and the wines produced in sandy soils that survived the dreadful phylloxera plague. The weather in Sintra is temperamental. Ideally, choose spring or summer, but always be prepared for the cold.
